Description

Research suggests that individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ are at greater risk for substance use and mental health issues, compared with the sexual majority population that identifies as heterosexual. Furthermore, LGBTQ+ clients typically enter substance use disorder treatment with more severe problems, greater psychopathology and greater medical service utilization when compared with heterosexual clients. This course will review the basics of gender and sexuality, including the history of LGBTQ+ alcohol and drug use culture. It will provide participants with an understanding of the principles of culturally informed and responsive care for LGBTQ+ patients with substance use disorder(s).

Disclaimer

Effective June 27, 2023 the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced a one-time requirement of 8 hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders for practitioners who are applying for or renewing their DEA license. This 1-hour ACCME-accredited course meets the DEA/SAMHSA requirement.
